It is up to you to then learn how to make the refreshing drink we call lemonade out of them.

I was handed one of those opportunities recently in the form of a stroke. The stroke happened following a lovely, active hiking holiday I took to Mexico. When we returned -38 wind chills greeted us at the Calgary airport. The following day on Jan 30, about 6 weeks ago I had a stroke. I realized what was happening when I could not feel temperature with my left hand and which had become increasingly stiff as the day progressed. As I waited for a ride to come and bring me to hospital or clinic to get this checked, I did acupuncture and moxa on myself using the points I was familiar with from working on several patients who had used Acupuncture for stroke rehabilitation or recovery.

The good news is my left arm and left face recovered very well from these early treatments! Through the quick referral system in place for TIA or strokes I was assessed by multiple scans and tests a few days later confirming the size and scope of the stroke. The Doctors and Stroke Specialist, were surprised by the quick reversal and recovery from usual stroke symptoms, of paralysis of face and arm, as well as sensory recovery. They encouraged me to continue receiving acupuncture or other rehabilitation for any lingering symptoms.

AS you know in Traditional Chinese Medicine, we look for root causes, and do not just treat the branch or symptom. I am very grateful to the western medicine tests that helped identify the underlying problem of irregular and too fast heart beat as the reason for the stroke. I continue to search for the root to that root too, and may have a hint with a ongoing problem called sleep apnea. A little personal history here is that 3 of my 4 grandparents, and my Dad, all had similar events in their lives, at about the age I am currently. Plus in TCM I know that wind cold, such as I experienced at the chilly Calgary airport, in a body that is overtired from 15 days of hiking holidays, set the stage for me to have a stroke. More good news is that I have preemptively been taking supplements to guard against or recover from stroke for a couple of years due to my family history.

So that is the lemon part of the story. Now to the lemonade portion.
I like and strive to live a balanced life. As my business has grown in the 5 years I have been doing acupuncture, this has become more challenging. I really enjoy my work and hate telling a client that the next opening is 2 weeks from next Thursday, so I would squeeze them in around the edge of the schedule and sacrifice some of my time to stay balanced and well rested. I now need to address that and write to inform you I will be working a significantly reduced schedule for the next few months. I am aiming to get a locum (substitute) BC registered acupuncturist in place to attend to the needs that I am currently not able to meet.

In order to heal I need to listen to advice I often give out to my patients to get more rest and listen to one’s body. In doing this now, I am hopefully expectant to return to good health soon.
So instead of viewing this as a lemon – or not being able to currently do the work I love, I am choosing to view it as an ingredient to get me to the prize of enjoying more lemonade! Or in translation – more balance and recovery for me, and a have a second acupuncturist/ wholistic health practitioner at Flourishing Health to meet your health optimization needs. I hope to be able to introduce you to that person in the near future and ask you to include me in your prayers or vibes for restored health in the meantime. Online bookings can still be made from the website. I (Heather F) am limited to booking about 10 hours per week currently, & Lori Bru continues to offer her craniosacral or massage services several shifts per week from the Flourishing Health space at 503, 7 Ave, Invermere. As always these appointments may be booked online from our website: https://flourishinghealth.ca/

There is also a new BCRMT starting in my building whose name is Sophie Berkoff and bookings can be made online with her too from her website: sophieberkoffrmt.com

In closing I am grateful for having the TCM tools to treat many ailments, and especially the ones for stroke most recently. Thanks for supporting your health with the tools I offer, and know that it is my sincere desire to continue to do so.

Healthy Regards,

The picture above is from one of my favourite fall activities. Kayaking on our local and world class wetland, with friends and a picnic. It is refreshing and renewing in that it strengthens my friend bonds, quiets my mind and nurtures my soul with large doses of nature with the birds, amphibians, fish, plants and insects that reside there. Like the wetlands with all those components, there are so many facets to health care too. Recreation and self care are important contributors to health body, mind and spirit!

This September many of you may be breathing a deep breath after the hectic pace of summer in a tourist town, or others of you are gearing up for an increased pace of fall with school or new projects. What ever the pace I encourage you to address your health with a big dose of self care in the way or modality that suits you best.

I would like to remind you that my services are available to all ages, so if you have a school aged person in your household that needs health support I invite you to bring them to Flourishing Health clinic. I have treated a number of children and teens with issues such as digestive problems, headaches, insomnia, and anxiety. Parent or guardian are welcome to sit in during the treatment to make it most comfortable for the students.

Teachers also have a soft spot to land for an hour or two per month in my clinic to support their busy careers with the tools of massage, acupuncture, diet therapy and aromatherapy. Also I am now able to direct bill Blue Cross for any in the school district or others that have that insurance provider.

As always seniors are also most welcome. Some of the issues I have recently done a deep dive of research on is treating arthritis and degenerative disc disease, having had a brush with those myself. The good news is that acupuncture and TCM are great options for the management of these challenges.

Each of you may answer that with your unique recipe for fun, nutrition, exercise and all the other components for a healthy life. It is an important question that many of us forget to ask ourselves and actually take the time to ponder, answer and perhaps even write down the answers to! There is a well known study on goals that are written down are 90% more probable to be realized. So go ahead and write down your health goals for the coming months.

The above picture was at a lovely scarecrow festival I had the pleasure of attending recently. It was a day I felt like I was flourishing by having fun with friends, eating well, getting exercise, fresh air, taking vitamins or supplements to support my health and filling my wellness tank up.

This “full tank” definitely helped with handling stress, when later that day we had to be resourceful, to get our towed car back from the neighbouring town! We made a new friend along the way, and continued on a merry holiday.

The reason I encourage you to ask yourself “is your health tank full?” is that as we head into the cooler season it is a vital resource for our immunity. The more care we take of ourselves, the more natural immunity and resilience we will have for seasonal ailments – big or small.
In light of that I will be offering some courses to support you with the tools of Reflexology, and Guilt Free Winter/ Christmas snacks.

The Guilt Free Christmas Snacks held on Nov 29 6:30 -8:30 pm, will be in conjunction with Groundswell, cost $50/$55, including about $30 worth of take home snacks, to enjoy with your family or friends. Sign up for this session, by signing up at: https://groundswellnetwork.ca/events/

The second workshop of Reflexology will be held on Nov 30th, is a cozy shared health support, of a specific style of foot and hand massage. This is best signed up for with a partner or friends willing to touch your feet! It is an introductory level being taught, yet with practice can be most supportive to your health. I frequently use it to lessen the discomfort of a cold or stuffy sinuses. Cost of $50 per person will include a foot & hand chart for reference, with aromatherapy massage lotion provided. Please bring a towel and wear loose fitting pants that can be raised to the knees. Sign up from my website at flourishinghealth.ca

Back to those health goals… if you have unused insurance benefits including Acupuncture I invite you to support your health by using them before they expire at the end of ’22! Book from the website https://flourishinghealth.ca/

Pondering it lead me down a few paths, until I had the summer joy of sharing my love of plants and the history of where that came from, with a dear friend seen in the above picture. This delightful way to spend a summer morning made me want to answer the above question with the title of “Rose petal picker EXTRAORDINAIRE”, along with teacher of nature, medicine maker, lover of life, and of course supporter of Health that Flourishes.

All four seasons have their magic and beauty however my dreams and day dreams are usually set in fair weather, with spring flowers and warm breezes. Perhaps this is a simple craving after a really cool spring, or some peculiarity of mental health, or that I ate watermelon before bed…
Which ever of these it may be I am and living this new title I bestow upon myself by sharing a favourite rose patch with a friend who was curious about what to do with them and how they could be medicinal. It is that season of my dreams and I celebrate it by making anything and everything I can think of with rose petals. Rose petal tea, rose infused honey, rose tincture or cordial , or even rose salad dressings will be made and available in the coming months at Flourishing Health clinic. Another favourite way to enjoy rose is through aromatherapy.
Aromatically Roses are the highest vibration of essential oils and they are chemically very complex and treat a myriad of disharmonies in the body and dare I say the world. We give roses as gifts. The smell of them may remind you of a time or event or even special person in your life. Such is the case for me. They literally are heart warming and stress reducing.

My petite French grandma grew roses and made rosehip syrup and tea which was loaded with vitamin C and other antioxidants. One year she gathered as many of her grand children as possible for a special rose event. She gave each of us a pair of garden gloves and a bucket or bag and we set off on my parent’s farm for a blissful morning of gathering Wild Rose petals. This special event was filled with much frolicking, wild flowers in our hair, picking and eating contests and eventually about 5 gallons of the delicate pink petals were gathered.

From these fragile pink gems she coaxed the best wine I have in my life tasted. It transported me back to that early June day of sunshine, family and roses, with a taste that entered through taste buds and curled to every cell in a domino wave of delight. As this event happened when I was only 10 years of age one could ask – What did I know about wine yet again the complex aromatherapy chemistry of wild rose?
The wine was doled in small portion at weddings, funerals, and family gatherings for a few years following the grand day and my original assumption of its magnificence grew with each sip through those years’ special events.

A few years ago, I inherited my grandmother’s wine recipe books, and will someday make rose petal wine. Until then I invite you to pick a few and sprinkle them on your granola, your salad, your dessert, your life, and cherish the joy with the grand energy of springing into summer they carry.
I also have rose essential oil and can custom blend a perfume including it if you desire. An aromatherapy consultation complete with blend in lotion or perfume format is available at Flourishing Health in Invermere. I am a Registered Aromatherapist, and rose petal picker extraordinaire, which some days is more special to me than all the other letters behind my name.

Foraging 101 coming up on June 29th – register at Invermere College of the Rockies!
Summer Solstice is always such a special time of the year. Spring has blossomed into summer with a profusion of flowers blooming simultaneously this year, making it a great year to host a foraging class and learn about the flavours and benefits of some of these native or introduced plants.
To register for an upcoming walk and talk full of flowers, trees and perhaps even mushrooms, click here:
https://cotr.bc.ca/continuing-education/courses/foraging-in-the-east-kootenays/

Summer Hours: Flourishing Health Clinic will be open all summer to support your health and help it flourish through this busy and fun filled season.
Currently hours of operation are Monday Tuesday and Wednesday 12- 7, and Thursday 9-3. Bookings can be made on line at our website – https://flourishinghealth.ca/.

I look forward to seeing you soon. Blue Cross and many other insurance plans cover Acupuncture. Use your benefits to benefit your health.
Healthy Regards

Heather Fischbuch
RAc , RMT(Ab) RA, RP

The post On being human, gratitude for modern and traditional medicine, and importance of hydration and movement! appeared first on Flourishing Health.

Flourishing health can mean different things to each of us. For me at this age and stage of my life, that means being able to hike to beautiful places like in the above picture for a swim in a cold mountain lake. It also means continuing to learn to use & share that learning with you in my thriving health clinic.
I had the opportunity to geek out with learning about nutrition for the nervous system and injuries or challenges to it at a recent training in Victoria. This info may be of interest to anyone that has had a concussion (TBI) , stroke, memory challenges, anxiety or depression. I definitely do not have all the answers to this giant part of body/mind health , yet happy to have a few more techniques and supportive suggestions for it.

The readers digest version of this workshop is “optimize your liver function”! Many hormones and neurotransmitters get their start in the liver, therefore if your liver is sluggish due to diet, lifestyle or even stress those important components to a fully functioning system are compromised. Herbs to help with this are Milk Thistle, Dandelion, and Artichoke leaf. Some diet for liver support according to TCM includes the bitter or sour flavours such as lemon, lime, many leafy greens, and reduction of alcohol and stress.

Now for the “BEING HUMAN” story, part of the above heading. Once I had signed up for the above training I decided to extend it, with a little road trip holiday, to Vancouver Island with a friend. All went well during our Island time, and I’m happy to report abundant flowers, walks, good food and laughs with friends is another way I find happiness and feel like I am flourishing. I wish some form of that for each of you.
On the way back we got a late start. We were eager to get home yet ferry delays, road construction and the like, made for a very long day with too few stops, not great food, and not enough water packed for the length of the travel time. Fast forward a couple of days home and my travelling companion friend spends an uncomfortable day in emergency room of hospitals getting checked out for deep vein thrombosis which can happen on long travel days with out enough moving of your legs to get blood circulating! She is recovering and is grateful for blood thinners administered that day. To continue the healing she is also doing some lymphatic enhancing leg soaks in mineral water, movement therapy with her legs, and supplementing with products to support good circulation now and in the future.

Fast forward another day and my body starts feeling uncomfortable, then pained, then shaky, then I start passing blood clots! I take myself to our local Emergency department and get treated with care and respect despite being a very busy morning there. I thought it was initially a bladder infection going from 0- 100 in a matter of a few hours. It was more serious, in that it was kidney stones. Once it was diagnosed I applied appropriate acupressure points to reduce the pain and help my stressed system relax a bit. I am happy to report the pain went from a 8/10 to a 2/10 with these techniques. I am also happy that I exist in a time where we have technology like x- rays, ct scans, blood thinners and antibiotics to address these type of emergency situations. The blending of ancient and modern medicine can be very harmonious to help restore and balance our health care needs. Today I will go gather some herbs to also continue supporting my kidney health, and you can see more about them in the following link:
https://wildspiritherbals.com/blogs/wild-spirit-herbals/shannon-talks-about-herbs?fbclid=IwAR3EdO2BMjqri6JH-oRDaxt48p8k4Bv6GUMtkmJtE7Lq0yZy34LFLi9wu3I

In conjunction with Groundswell I will be offering a foraging walk to teach about this and about 20 other of great local plants that have nutritional or health supporting properties on June 15 and 16. Please get in touch with Groundswell or me if you are interested in these.

In TCM we are taught to look for and treat the root as well as the branch (cause vs. symptom). In looking back at my past few years there are many times I have had muscle cramps and sudden fatigue that felt like hitting a wall. These are signs of dehydration. Dehydration is one of the root cause of kidney stones. On our recent road trip I was a lazy human in not drinking enough water or getting out for walks while on the driving across a large province, to get our circulation going. This presented a very big and painful lesson to learn for both of us, that we shall not quickly forget. Going forward into the summer I invite you to get Moving and Stay Hydrated !

Come see me for a spring tune up. Cheers with my overflowing glass of mountain spring water.

The post On Flourishing And Being Human appeared first on Flourishing Health.

For now I am taking an unplanned seasonal break for this week, to isolate & will return to my beloved work when the much appreciated rapid tests, now available, show that I’m no longer contagious, and my energy has returned.
Despite all these factors, I am now nursing a sore throat and achy body on day 3 of the journey through it. I am using daily doses of home made soup, acupuncture points and essential oil blends, as well as large doses of Vitamin d, c, and zinc (and a handful of those other genetic disposition herbs and supplements mentioned above).

I want someone to pet my hair and tell me stories, yet Netflix and weird fevered dreams in my frequent naps are doing their part to keep my spirits up. My increased empathy to all the clients, friends or family that reached out with these or other symptoms of this wacky virus.
I will dredge up the needed energy to finish this little blog post with gratitude that I live in this time of so much knowledge of the human body and medicine with advances or new findings being made constantly. Gratitude also to the increasing acceptance of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the herbal medicines of my French and German Grandmothers that I learned from. Plant medicines that can support and relieve in gentle yet profound ways.

Gratitude to this little resilient body of mine, that she is getting through this virus, and that I can laugh at the weird fever dreams, knowing I will survive to continue to support my own, as well as others’ health, in the best ways I know how! Using nutrition first, quality sleep, positive state of mind, depth of relationships, fresh air and exercise, herbal allies to lean on and of course acupuncture combined with massage to smooth out the rough patches: health will prevail.

Healthy regards, Heather

The post April Views and Health Reviews appeared first on Flourishing Health.
