Happy August to all you wonderful readers. It’s my hope that the moisture filled weeks we’ve had, are seeing your gardens and health blooming!

In TCM we take weather and climate into consideration for your health and various symptoms that show up to impact ones health.

For example I am sure some of you may have an old injury that aches more when a storm is happening, or even threatening. And some “Snowbird clients” go as far as to escape our cold winters to somewhere warmer and dryer for the sake of their health.

In TCM one of the most common weather factors that causes aches and pain is cold and dampness. The cold slows the movement of Qi/energy in the body and the damp creates inflammation with this slowed energy resulting in swollen joints – particularly around areas of old injuries. We have treated a lot of this pattern this spring and summer. There are remedies for this you can access year round if this is a challenge for you.

Far infrared light and heat are some of the best options to chase the aches and inflammation away. Though we have had a good dose of rain and storms recently, we have also enjoyed some heat this summer. Getting out into the sun during those times is most healthful! Yes we want to avoid sun burns and skin damage, however sunlight is health promoting! Morning sun exposure or even enjoying the heat and light in the shade of a nearby tree, during the warmth of the day, can be helpful. Morning sun to your unshaded eyes is also helpful for setting your circadian rhythms, aiding one to fall asleep at a good time about 12- 14 hours following the sunlight exposure.

Heat packs and heating balms or liniments are also supportive to sore joints.

Red light therapy is available for rent from my office or one can purchase a unit for yourself online for those with more chronic joint inflammation.

We occasionally use a herbal cigar of moxa, or a heat lamp over an area which gently heats an acupuncture point to get the energy flowing more freely.

That free flow of energy is a key to why we feel better in the summer generally.

Other ways to build your health bank up in the summer, is through seasonal focused eating. This translates to enjoying the bounty of fresh veggies and in season fruits, along with shorter cooking methods, such as grilling. If your system is digestively strong, it will be able to handle more raw veggies and a variety of salads. If it’s not so strong, try stir frying them to warm them quickly, to capture that fresh flavour of summertime.

The flavours of summer in TCM ( yes seasons have affiliated flavours!) is sweet. So enjoy a peach, or melon, or berries and an occasional ice cream now as they may be “ seasonally” off the menu as the weather shifts in the fall.

We’d like to share a heartfelt update — Morven will be moving to Fernie in September, and with that, her time at the clinic will be coming to a close for now. It has been such a joy and privilege for her to work with this wonderful community, and she is deeply grateful for the trust, warmth, and connections built here in such a short amount of time. Morven will be available for appointments only until August 29th, with limited spaces remaining, so please book in for the month as soon as possible. She will be returning in October for a week and looks forward to welcoming you then for follow‑up visits. If you’ve been considering a session, now is the perfect time to book so she can see you before beginning this next chapter.

AS of September Heather will be searching for another TCM associate to join Flourishing Health. Please let any you may know of this fact and that the beautiful Columbia Valley is a great place to live and work. Until that wonderful new associate practitioner is found, appointments will be available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with a variety of time options. As usual appointments can be booked online from our website or by texting 250-688-0033.

This practice is very common in many parts of the world and in our human history prior to supermarkets and the ability to ship foods globally became common practice.

In the winter we lean to slow cooked soups and stews and long lasting root veggies, and at long last the spring brings tender greens, to cleanse our livers from that heavier winter fare.

One of the first and some may say best of these greens is the lowly dandelion.

The leaves may have a slight diuretic affect as energetically they cleanse the kidneys. The flower buds are crunchy and tasty with my preferred ways of enjoying this spring treat in stir fries, or pickled.

The flowers themselves can be added to teas, salads or into mocktails or lemonade, with lemon being the sour flavour that energizes our liver in the spring. The pairing of the sweet flowers and sour lemon is a wake up for our taste buds too. Lastly the root can be dug washed and chopped, dried or used fresh to make tea or tinctures from, to cleanse our hard working liver.

Some of these are from overuse situations, yet many are from demanding more of our muscles and tendons before they are warmed up or in condition for the demands we ask of them.

Adequate hydration and even added electrolytes are also important to minimize risk of strains. A home made type of electrolyte is a tsp of lemon juice and pinch of quality sea salt to your liter of water. Commercial flavours of electrolytes are also widely available. Magnesium glyconate is the best form of magnesium to aid for relief of tendon or muscle soreness. I am also out picking poplar buds to make a liniment which will be available at the clinic soon.

Spring sale of 40% off on all of last years infused oils, tinctures, salves and dried herbs is now on to make room for this years batches.

Do you get chilled easily, and your eyes water as the weather cools and wind swirls? That cold wind on the head and neck can often lead to headaches, migraines and even contribute to lowering our immunity. I’d like to take this newsletter opportunity to explain a bit more about that from a Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective.

In TCM there is a zone of the body called Wei or protective Qi. It lies between the skin and the muscles and in western medical anatomy would relate to the lymphatics, which have a lot to do with our immunity. This level helps us fight external pathogenetic factors such as wind or cold. It helps keep us warm by raising the hairs on our skin, or shivering to warm the muscles. It regulates the opening and closing of pores to allow us to cool of via sweating, or stay warm with closed pores and raised hairs. It circulates with movement rather than through the pumping of your heart as how the blood circulates.

There are actually Acupoints on the back of the scalp at top of neck called “wind pools” which address this. At this time of year I use these points often and encourage folks to wear scarves or toques to cover the back of their head and neck to support their immune system.

When one gets a cold, yes there very well may be viruses in circulation and you chanced upon them. Yet if your wei Qi and immunity are strong you are much less likely to “catch” the cold. There are other factors such as nutrition, quality sleep, enough but not too much exercise that all affect our immunity and I encourage you to consider all of these at this changeable weather time of year.

So in conclusion here are the tips for immunity enhancing for November:
-wear a coat, scarf and toque when out in the cold or wind
– eat for the season with colorful roasted veggies and quality proteins
– drink warm instead of iced beverages
-limit or reduce sugar intake as it leads to inflammation & lowered immunity
– reduce highly processed food and eat real and home cooked meals.
-socialize with folks that make you happy (and are not sneezing or coughing at the social gatherings).
-get enough rest and practice good sleep hygiene.

If you do get a cold this season, know that we have herbal and aromatherapy supports, cupping, as well as Acupuncture to help address it’s discomforts. Be well.

As we transition into the darker, colder days, it is common for mental health to become more challenging. Acupuncture is a helpful tool to ease the transition and support your mental and emotional health during challenging times. Acupuncture promotes relaxation and reduces the impacts of stress on the body, helping your body and mind navigate this shift with ease. This ancient practice can support emotional well-being by reducing stress hormones, promoting restful sleep, and boosting mood-regulating neurotransmitters. For those feeling seasonal blues or anxiety, regular acupuncture sessions can help keep mental health balanced and create a strong foundation for the months ahead. It’s always helpful to have the support of your community, and your local healthcare practitioners. Embrace fall as a time to care for your mind and body holistically— we are here to help.

Remembering Remembrance day.

We honour our veterans and even our ancestors with our memory of them. Take some mindful moments in the coming week to think of them or if you know a veteran or have a grandparent that could benefit from some company give them a call or stop by for a visit. Companionship, friendship and visits are all a form of health care building resilience and wellness. It’s a great season to spread the joy of reminiscing over shared memories, making new ones , or simply providing companionship to someone who needs it.

Firm massage strokes and pressure are applied with the therapist’s hands to the feet and hands of the patient. Reflexology may have spots of tenderness or even discomfort that will ease when worked with a variety of pressures applied. These tender spots, are also known as reflex zones, and in some cases corresponding with points on the meridians of Acupuressure or Acupuncture. Stimulation of the points can aid in relaxing the area and regaining good health through balancing the energy flow through the meridians.

When a spot is very tender it may be at the site of an old injury, scar tissue or blocked energy flow, along a meridian. By applying pressure in a variety of depths and intensities the blockage may be opened up and the pain lessens. Think of this much like chipping away at a dam, or opening a gate which allows the flow to travel freely again, once opened. If the blockage has been there for a long time, it will likely take more than one session to ease the discomfort, and regulate the flow to a comfortable rate. These specialized foot massages may be included into a whole body massage or used on their own to address specific needs of the patient.

Hand and ear massages are also a part of reflexology. The three regions (feet, hands, ears) may be used separately or together to aid a person’s health. Seeds or magnets may also be applied with tape to a select spot to continue the stimulation of a point after the time spent with the therapist is completed. This is like ongoing homework to support that organ or system in it’s rebalancing.

If you think this may be the massage style that would be beneficial for you, please consider Hand or Foot Reflexology when booking your next massage in the Columbia Valley. Heather will be teaching an intro to Reflexology on Feb 14 and has been a therapist of if for 32 years. If any are interested in this course please sign up with a friend by emailing flourishinghealth4all@gmail.com

Flourishing Health has numerous other styles of massage available at the newly opened clinic in Invermere.

The post Reflexology is so Much more than a Foot rub appeared first on Flourishing Health.

Fall is the season to build our immunity, and strengthen the organs of Lung and Large Intestine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the two organs are considered to be of the metal element and the season of metal is autumn.

It is also the season where many viruses start to make the rounds. Our bodies immunity will be much stronger if we build it up with a diet supporting these organs at this transition time of year. Also avoiding or reducing foods that cool us may also prove helpful. And all seasons I promote a while foods diet and minimize processed or deep fried or overly sweet foods.

To break that down we’ll talk about what foods strengthen the lung and thereby our resistance to respiratory viruses first.

Our Lungs are so necessary to our overall energy – if we don’t breath well or deeply on a regular basis we feel sluggish and lethargic.

One of my favourite foods to build energy is Sweet potato or yam. It’s very high in nutrients- , carotenoids, Vitamin A, specifically. It’s temperature is neutral – meaning great for all, and can be made more warming on a cool winter day with the addition of warming spices. Or still great for those suffering from hot flashes by leaving those warming spices out and opting for others. It aids the organs of Lung , kidney and spleen – all helpful organs to battle any phlegm in the body. It soothes coughs, diarrhea , frequent urination, or excess discharges of mucus. It has no contra indications.

Todays Yam soup recipe is African recipe where yams and peanuts are staples.

1 large yam chop in cubes and boil in 4 cups of water

1 onion diced

1 or 2 stalks of celery or 1 small apple diced in small pieces

Salt and pepper

1 tsp or less of coriander

1 tsp or less of cinnamon

1/2 tsp of ginger grated or powdered

4 tbsp peanut butter

Simmer vegetables until soft , adding spices and peanut butter for last 5 minutes. Puree with stick blender or in blender. Serve and garnish with parsley if desired. Parsley also is an aid to draining dampness from body so helpful for colds or phlegm build ups.

This soup will build energy and strength of lungs at the same time as aiding in fight against any build up of phlegm or mucus that may be affecting the lung. Great for both prevention and treatment of lung challenging colds or coughs.

Foods to avoid when feeling weak in energy or lung area are: raw foods ( salads) dairy and heavier grains.

Another of lungs challenges is heat – as in fevers or even hot air inhaled repeatedly ( eg smoking) .

I’ve included a Borsch in our sampling today for that reason and it is so full of colourful veggies brimming with anti oxidants to cleanse and nourish your body.

I have used a bone broth base which is filled with collagen and Vitamins K as these bones are from grass fed happy animals.

To 4 cups of bone broth, add 2 cups each grated beets, cabbage, and carrots. Beets build blood , they are moistening and again good for all with no contra indications. Carrots feed the lung and spleen , clears toxins and infections, drains dampness ( phlegm) , reduces coughing, and is even recommended for tonsillitis. Carrots are known as vegetable ginseng.

Cabbage is helpful for the common cold both in preventing and treating , and is also recommended for arthritis, constipation , indigestion and varicose veins. To these powerhouse veggies I usually add salt and pepper to taste and a pinch or two of dill for it’s warming tendency and ability to expel colds and stimulate appetite. My Ukrainian grandma would also add a dollop of sour cream for creamy texture.

Foods to avoid when experiencing lung heat &/or fever are: warming foods like : coffee, alcohol, onions, garlic , cinnamon , ginger, fennel, chicken or lamb.

Ok we’ve covered building immunity, feeding coughs & fevers, reducing phlegm.

Now to address another lung ailment – the dry cough/sore throat with moistening foods. This type of cough is sometimes the lingering after a long cold, or the tickle at the start of a virus.

Foods that aid these symptoms include : seaweeds, spirilina, orange, peach, pear, apple, tomatoes, banana, green beans, tofu, honey, eggs, clams, pork , slippery elm and marshmallow root.

Foods to avoid if experiencing this are: coffee, grapefruit, leek, onion, & chill pepper. i

Todays dessert is a peach /pear compote with additions of honey, and slippery elm. Simmer all together until soft and blend if smooth consitency desired.

Old Chinese saying “if you eat peaches you will look like a peach!”

Pears help all types of dryness – skin, lung, throat, cracked lips, dry mucus membranes, constipation.

I hope you can incorporate this season information to build yourselves and your families up in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your contributions to food bank. If any of you would like specific dietary consultations from a TCM perspective I am happy to offer sessions here at Mtn Hub with a 30 – 60 minute consultation to address your specific needs.

Sincerely,

Heather Fischbuch

The needles, as thin as a human hair, are inserted strategically in selected points to address areas of imbalance.

It is used for a very wide variety of issues ranging from pain, or scar tissue, to accelerate healing after an injury, to balance digestive disturbances, fertility difficulties, insomnia, headaches, to arthritis and even depression.

It should also be noted that acupuncture is one vital component of traditional Chinese Medicine yet is often accompanied by herbal and diet therapy and massage.

It does not enter the skin but slides along the top of it locating areas of tenderness and stimulates the movement of Qi (energy) and blood in this area. This gentle electrical stimulation is a way of giving a treatment without puncturing the skin utilizing the same points that would be used in acupuncture to reduce pain or address a health challenge you may be experiencing. Heather also uses acupressure during some massages.

Reflexology is the application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques.

Reflex points in hands, and feet correspond to different body organs and systems and that working on them has a beneficial effect on the person’s health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the meridians powerful “shu” points are located on the hands and feet and the manual stimulation of these can be very beneficial for a variety of ailments.

Quite simply by applying manual pressure on hands, feet and ears, on meridian points we can assist the body to release tension, reduce pain, and increase optimal functions and range of motion.

This type of treatment can help alleviate pain, stress, anxiety, insomnia, and hormonal or digestive challenges through focusing on body reflex in areas normally not associated with these symptoms. Reflex areas can be found on the feet, ears, head, and face. This type of treatment helps to restore the body’s natural balance and release blockages that can occur from periods of illness, pain or stress.

According to the Reflexology Association of Canada, “Reflexology is one of the safest and least invasive alternative therapeutic practices available.” – and of course we don’t disagree!

Typically the use of aromatherapy blends and reflexology is a part of every massage done by Heather.

Diet therapy is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with flavors, and temperatures, and even textures of foods all being considered for the constitution and symptoms of each patient. Learning which foods to avoid, as well ones to focus on in a diet may significantly and quickly improve one’s health.

TCM is a complete health system compromised of several methods with diet therapy being among them. This therapy considers the energetic qualities of the foods and how the food can influence the long term health of the individual.

This therapy is great for not only maintaining great health but also restoring ones health. Deficiencies and excesses can be corrected with foods and balance in your body can be restored. Since food is one of our primary sources of energy, it has a great potential to influence our health.

Food provides a constant, daily medication rate that nothing else can achieve for overall wellness.

Diet Therapy Service
